The First Post

How did we get here?

I thought it would be appropriate given that this is the first post to be published on the brand new Dorset Food Network website to expand on some of my experiences whilst bringing the idea together.

As those of you who have read the ‘About Us’ page will already know, this website has been 18 months in the making. Along the way I’ve sought the input of many local business owners and the idea has evolved as a result of the conversations that took place. There was further input from members of the Dorset public who were also kind enough to spare me some of their valuable time to share their views.

The Problem and The Solution

It was clear that people found it difficult to find everything they needed without doing a lot of research. The majority of people asked gave the same answer. This was something that could be resolved and the Internet was the place to do it.

When I was 13, my parents purchased a really fancy set of 26 leather bound hardback encyclopaedias. It was huge. It required a whole new book shelf to store it and the set looked absolutely stunning. Expensive yes, but a fantastic investment with three kids aged between 6 and 13 and all those years of education ahead of us. They helped me and some friends with homework assignments for a good year or so until we moved house at which time, the afore mentioned parents invested in a nice new PC which within 6 months was joined by a state of the art 28.8kbps dial-up modem and subsequent connection to the World Wide Web. In the following 21 years, I don’t think one of those encyclopaedias has been opened. In fact I used a pile of them not long ago to prop up a radiator while it wasn’t bracketed to a wall.

The internet was born and we haven’t looked back. A recent survey by Yelp identified that 85% of people use the internet to search for local businesses. I know when I need an answer, the first thing I do is hit up Google. So while our finest producers and dining venues stay true to methods and recipes passed down through the generations, we can have that information at our fingertips in a matter of seconds.

So what happens next?

Firstly, we will be growing our listings over the next few weeks for you to discover many more places to shop and eat.

There are more very exciting developments in the pipeline to look forward to and we are already working hard on those behind the scenes.

In the meantime, take a look around, explore the website, sign up to receive our e-letters and keep checking back to see which new member businesses have been added.

All those involved in creating this service are very excited to be supporting the Dorset food industry and helping you to discover the delights on your doorstep. So please, share in our journey as we grow and enjoy the products and services offered by the wonderful businesses who have already joined us in our quest.
